Listen for meaning, not just individual words.
Strong listening combines context, key words, inference and verification. You do not need to understand every sound to follow the message.
Predict the situation before listening.
Use the topic, speaker and purpose to create a few expectations. This gives new words a context instead of leaving them isolated.
Catch the main message first.
On the first listen, focus on the situation and overall point. Do not stop mentally at every unfamiliar word.
Listen again for details that carry meaning.
Names, numbers, dates, action verbs and stressed words often answer the most important questions.
Use context, then check your interpretation.
Tone and situation can help you infer meaning, but treat them as clues. Confirm the interpretation against the words and details you heard.
Show what you understood.
Answer the actual question, paraphrase the message or summarise the key point. Listening becomes stronger when you check your understanding rather than simply replaying sound.
