How to Use Have with Do to Ask Questions About Possession

Home » Listening » How to Use Have with Do to Ask Questions About Possession
We use have in a sentence to show the possession of something. The form of ‘do’ is used with ‘have’ to ask questions when it is asked about possession of something.

Formation of a question using ‘have’

We use ‘do’ with ‘have’ in this sentence to ask a question.

When we ask a question, we should use ‘do’ at the start of a sentence.

So the formation of a question is as follows:

  • Do + subject (I/we/you/they/any other plural noun) + have + other words + question mark (?)

Formation of short answers using ‘have’

When a question is asked, short answers are most commonly used.

We use the first verb in a sentence to form the short answer. It may be an auxiliary verb or a form of ‘be.

When we answer a question, pay attention to the first verb in the sentence.

In this lesson, we are forming the questions with do… have. So, in this question, we use ‘do at first, which is an auxiliary verb.

So, the formation of a short affirmative answer and a negative answer is as follows:

  • Yes, + subject (I/ we/ you/ they/ any other plural noun) + do.
  • No, + subject (I/ we/ you/ they/ any other plural noun) + don’t.

How to answer in short

We have an example:

Do I have a book with pictures?

The short answers will be:

  • Yes, I do. (affirmative)
  • No, I don’t. (negative)

Yes, I do. Or—No, I don’t.—sounds more polite than only answering—Yes. Or No.

The short answer is to avoid the repetition of a whole sentence.
