In the previous lesson, we learned how to use was to describe the past state. In this lesson, we shall learn to use was in a negative sentence to describe the past state of being.

Use of Was in Negative Sentences About the Past State

You know that the verb ‘was’ is used with the pronouns I, he, she, it, and any other singular noun. In the lesson Use of was to tell about the past state, we used ‘was’ in affirmative sentences.

In this lesson, we will use ‘was’ in negative sentences to describe the past state of being. But first, we shall see how to form these sentences.

Formation of a sentence

In this sentence, we should use not with was’; that is, ‘was not’ to tell about the past state.

The formation of this sentence is as follows:

  • Subject (I/he/she/it/singular noun) + was not + other words + full stop (.)
