Jewels, also known as gems or gemstones, are rare minerals and precious stones used to decorate valuable objects. They are typically in various colours and sizes. We get these in a rough rock form, but they can be cut and polished to use in jewellery.
Most gemstones are quite hard. Soft minerals are also used in jewellery due to their lustrous appearance, which adds value. Gemstones are also valuable because they are rare or in short supply.
However, the world of gemstones is not limited to minerals. Non-mineral rocks (such as lapis lazuli) and organic materials also find their place in the realm of jewellery, earning the title of gemstones. These include amber or jet. Even corals and pearls, products of the sea, are sometimes considered gemstones, showcasing the diverse nature of these precious materials.
