Personal Pronoun

What is a personal pronoun?

A personal pronoun is a pronoun used to denote a person in singular or plural form. We use this pronoun in place of a person’s name.

A personal pronoun gives us information about

  • a speaker that is the ‘person’,
  • a pronoun, whether it is masculine, feminine or neuter, that is the ‘gender’,
  • whether it is singular or plural, which is the ‘number’,
  • pronoun whether it is subject or object, that is the ‘case’.

You can check the tabular form of these pronouns to understand them better.

Third person — neuteritittheythem

The pronoun ‘he’ is used for the masculine gender, ‘she’ for the feminine gender, and ‘it’ for the neuter gender and non-living things. The plural form of all third persons, that is, he, she, and it, is ‘they’. We use them for ‘her’ and ‘him’.

We know that the main function of a pronoun is to avoid repeating a noun or noun phrase. Personal pronouns serve the same function: avoiding repetition of a noun.
